History of the Society 1980s

The History of the Essex Society for Family History

Part 2 - The 1980's

In 1984 we became a Registered Charity.

1985 was a year of firsts. The Society's first Branch, The North East Essex Branch, based in Colchester, was formed.

Later that year the Society hosted a 3 day Family History Conference for the first time. It was held from 13-15 September at Writtle Agricultural College.

The Society gained its second branch when the North West Essex Branch, based in Saffron Walden, was formed in 1986.

In 1987 the first Postal Book Service was started. With the changing world of computers this was eventually replaced by the CDs by Post Service, giving members who cannot get to a meeting a chance to buy CDs which are of interest to Family Historians.
